Choosing the right insulation for you

From sturdy insulated wall panels to hassle-free insulation rolls, we’ve got solutions to help you cut down on the heating bills and keep your property at a comfortable temperature year-round. But how do you choose the best wall insulation for your needs?

From identifying what kind of wall your trying to insulate to the type of insulation you’re using, here’s a few pointers to get you started:

Choosing the right materials

We collaborate with renowned brands to offer various types of insulation for walls, including:

  • Glass mineral wool
  • Rock mineral wool
  • PIR (Polyisocyanurate)
  • Phenolic
  • Multi-foil

It’s important to speak to our specialists so we can help you identify which type of insulation you need.

External wall insulation vs. internal wall insulation

Choosing between external and internal wall insulation depends on your specific needs. External wall insulation enhances your property’s exterior, adds financial value, and provides weatherproofing, making it perfect for renovations.

Internal insulation is a cost-effective way to insulate specific rooms, though it may require rewiring and redecorating. Both methods of insulating solid walls effectively keep heat in and cold out, so assess your situation and walls to make the best choice. Our internal solutions include party wall insulation which improves thermal performance and reduces sound transmission through adjoining units, and partition wall insulation which enhances the thermal and acoustic performance of rooms within a building.

Cavity wall insulation

For properties built from 1920 onwards, you’ll probably have cavity walls. And if these haven’t been insulated, heat could be escaping through the cavities. Verify if the cavity’s width is at least 50mm wide and check it’s free from debris – from there, you’re good to go with insulating your cavity walls! By assessing your property’s cavity walls, you can take proactive steps to enhance energy efficiency and reduce heating costs.

Wall insulation roll vs. wall insulation boards

Rolls are cost-effective, flexible, and adaptable, making them ideal for fitting around curves, corners, and irregular shapes without leaving gaps. However, they typically have a higher U-value, providing less effective thermal insulation compared to boards.

Insulation panels for walls offer greater durability and stability, maintaining their structural integrity over time. They resist compression, sagging, deterioration, moisture, mould, and pests better than rolls, but they lack the flexibility.

You’ll also need to consider the thickness of your product, from 50mm insulation to 150mm. Ultimately, make sure to assess your space, your budget and your needs before investing. We have partnerships with leading suppliers to ensure we deliver top-quality products.

Frequently asked questions

How much is wall insulation?

Generally, the larger your property, the higher the cost of wall insulation. However, larger properties also stand to gain greater savings. Insulating solid walls typically starts from several thousand pounds. However, this investment could translate into substantial savings, potentially hundreds or even thousands of pounds, on energy bills.

Do I need building regulations for external wall insulation?

In general, you typically won’t need planning permission for external wall insulation – it’s usually considered ‘permitted development’. Exceptions include listed properties or if the addition of external wall insulation encroaches onto neighbouring land.

How do I know if my walls are insulated?

To check if your interior walls are insulated, simply touch them. If they feel cold and damp, your walls likely lack insulation. On the other hand, insulated exterior walls should feel cold since they’re designed to keep the heat inside. Any signs of mould or damp are a telltale sign that your walls are poorly insulated.
